The World Economic Forum (WEF) officially released the Global Aviation Sustainability Outlook 2026, highlighting the accelerating global transition toward low-carbon, electric, hydrogen-powered, and sustainable aviation technologies amid growing international efforts to achieve net-zero aviation emissions.
The report provides a comprehensive assessment of the current state of sustainable aviation development, covering key areas including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), hydrogen aviation, electric and hybrid-electric aircraft, advanced air mobility (AAM), lightweight composite materials, green airport infrastructure, and international policy coordination. It also examines emerging regulatory trends, investment dynamics, supply-chain challenges, and technological readiness across major aviation markets.
According to the report, global aviation is entering a “critical transition decade,” during which governments, industry leaders, research institutions, and international organizations are expected to significantly increase cooperation in order to accelerate the commercialization of next-generation green aviation technologies. The report notes that SAF production capacity, hydrogen propulsion systems, battery energy density, and digitalized air traffic management will become key drivers shaping the future competitiveness of the global aerospace sector.
The Global Aviation Sustainability Outlook 2026 further emphasizes that Europe, the United States, China, and the Middle East are rapidly expanding investments in sustainable aviation ecosystems. Several large-scale demonstration projects involving hydrogen-powered aircraft, electric regional aviation, and carbon-neutral airport operations are expected to enter operational testing phases over the next five years.
In addition, the report highlights the growing importance of international collaboration in addressing common challenges related to certification standards, infrastructure compatibility, financing mechanisms, and talent development. It calls for stronger multilateral coordination to ensure the aviation sector can meet long-term climate goals while maintaining global connectivity and economic resilience.
